Is cognac the same as Brandy?
To know the difference between Cognac and Brandy, we have to know what brandy is first. Brandy is a spirit gotten from the distillation of any type of fermented fruit juice or fruit mash, if the fruit is grapes is technically a wine.
It is a fairly strong, sweet tasting liquor, usually dark brown in colour and often mistaken as a type of whiskey.
So what is cognac?
Cognac is brandy that is produced in the Cognac region of France. If the brandy is not from Cognac, France then it is not real cognac, but there are other qualities that determine a true cognac.
- The first base must come from white grapes, the grape primarily used is called ‘Ugni blanc ‘
- It must go through two rounds of distillation, which must happen between October 1st and March 31st. If the distillation process occurs before or after this period then your cognac is invalid
Cognac is qualified into 3 major types based on age and this is always signified by symbols on bottles.
-
VS : ‘very special ‘ is cognac aged for at least 2 years
-
VSOP : ‘very superior old pale’ is cognac that has been aged for at least 4 years
- XO : ‘extra old ‘ cognac that has been aged for more than 6 years
So just like in the case of champagne and sparkling wine, all cognac is brandy but not all brandy is cognac. Brandy is made all over the world and just like cognac, they have their own names. Other types of cognacs are
Calvados : an apple based brandy from Normandy, France
Grappa : Italian grape based candy made from left over wine from wine making
Pisco :Peruvian brandy made from white grape.
Armagnac : grape based brandy from Armagnac, France.
Is Cognac a Whiskey?
Sometimes cognac is mistaken to be a type of whiskey, although they have some similarities:
They are both fermented drinks, they are aged in wooden barrels and they both get smoother with age. But they are different types of alcohol
- Whiskey is made from grains, mostly oats and barley. Cognac is made from grapes
- The age of whiskey is indicated by the exact number e.g Glenmorangie 10, 12,18. The age of Cognac is indicated with the terms VS, VSOP & XO.
- Cognac is distilled twice, while whiskey is usually distilled once.
- The minimum age of a cognac is 2 years and it could be as old as 50 years. The minimum age of whiskey is 3 years and it could be as old as 15 years.
- Whiskey can be produced anywhere in the world while cognac can only be produced in Cognac, France.
What does Cognac taste like?
Cognacs usually have complex flavours which is determined by the blend they are made of. Before blending cognac is referred to as Eau de vie. The blended flavours depend on the age of the Cognac and the type of barrel used in aging it.
VS – The youngest of the cognacs, they usually have flavours of flowers, fresh fruits and citrus.
VSOP – A blend of eau de vie aged for 4-12 years, good for sipping on their own. They usually have a general flavor of dried fruit and flowers. XO – Extra old cognacs have been aged for 20 – 35 years. The flavours vary depending on the maker but generally they taste of dried fruits, warm spices, toffee, nuts, chocolate and sometimes cigar.
